The TORCH Apprenticeship Program Supports the Future of Skilled Trades

Apprenticeship opportunities have long been part of Gundlach Tools’ approach to supporting skilled trades.

Over the last few years, it has become increasingly clear how important this work is to us and to the future of skilled trades. This led us to establish the TORCH Apprenticeship Program. TORCH brings these efforts together as a registered apprenticeship recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor, combining classroom instruction with on-the-job learning (OJL).

Participants gain exposure to the work behind precision tooling while learning alongside experienced professionals in precision machining and welding who demonstrate the importance of accuracy, consistency and craftsmanship.

An Experience That Builds Trade Careers

Our previous apprentices have gone on to pursue careers in machining, production and other technical fields. Their progress shows the value of early exposure to real manufacturing environments and learning directly from experienced professionals.

Guided learning, attention to detail and steady skill development help build confidence within the skilled trades.

Practical, Hands-On Learning in Skilled Trades

The TORCH Program introduces participants to a professional shop environment where problem-solving and accountability are part of everyday work through structured on-the-job learning (OJL). The program is designed for those exploring skilled trades, including students, early-career individuals and others interested in hands-on career paths.

Participants gain exposure to:

  • Professional shop practices.
  • Real manufacturing environments.
  • Applied problem-solving.
  • Foundational welding and machining concepts.
  • Expectations of modern production settings.

Classroom instruction combined with on-the-job learning supports applied learning and progress toward a portable, nationally recognized credential.

The program typically spans one to three years and is a paid apprenticeship where participants earn progressive wages as their skills develop and production increases.

Supporting Education and Career Growth

The TORCH Apprenticeship Program helps ease the transition from school to career by allowing participants to work while continuing their education.

Supplemental classroom instruction is an important part of registered apprenticeship and may be supported through local Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) grants, which can help cover tuition, books, fees and support services for high-demand fields. Participants may also earn academic credit toward a college degree while avoiding student debt.

Strengthening Our Industry and Our Community

The same principles that guide our work in precision tooling also guide our investment in future talent. Supporting those interested in skilled trades helps strengthen both our industry and the communities connected to it.

Registered apprenticeship programs help support workforce development and create long-term opportunities within skilled trades.

Encouraging hands-on career paths helps ensure knowledge, craftsmanship and industry experience continue to grow across future generations of tradespeople.
