Football season is back. Every week, coaches decide who starts, who sits, and what it will take to win.

A star on the bench doesn't score points, and the best tool in the van doesn't help if it's never in play.

Flooring installers make a similar call every time they load the truck. The tools and habits that earn a starting spot are the ones they can count on for every job.

Here's what a winning jobsite lineup looks like.

🎬 Film Study: Moisture and pH Testing

Coaches study film before game day because surprises are expensive. Testing a concrete slab before installation serves the same purpose.

Excess moisture or high alkalinity can cause problems long after the job is finished, so test under normal service conditions, check multiple areas, and compare the results with the flooring manufacturer's limits before work begins.

For a calcium chloride moisture and pH test, plan on three kits for the first 1,000 square feet and one per additional 1,000.

🏈 Quarterback: Your Utility Knife

The quarterback touches the ball on nearly every play. A utility knife works the same way, showing up at almost every stage of an installation.

A dull blade is easy to ignore until it tears a carpet backing or leaves a ragged vinyl edge. It also takes more force to push, which makes slips more likely.

Change blades before they feel dull, not after. A box of utility blades within reach makes it easier to build that habit.

🧱 Offensive Line: Floor Preparation

Offensive linemen rarely make the highlight reel, but no play works without them.

Floor prep plays the same role. A finished floor is only as good as the surface beneath it.

Before installation, take time to:

• Remove old adhesive, coatings and debris
• Grind down high spots and patch low ones
• Check flatness across the entire floor, not only the center of the room
• Clean up dust before primer or adhesive goes down

🛡️ Defense: Waterproof Shower Systems

Great defenses keep points off the scoreboard. In a shower, your opponent is water.

Tile and grout alone won't keep it out. Water looks for the weakest spot, which is usually a corner, a seam or a plumbing penetration.

Seal every penetration, reinforce corners and transitions, and let materials cure fully before tile goes on.

A few habits help every kick count:

• Set the pin depth so the pins grab the carpet backing without catching the pad
• Strike the bumper with the muscle just above your knee, not the kneecap
• Save the kicker for tight spaces and use a power stretcher for full rooms

🩹 Injury Report: Knee Protection

Even a strong lineup struggles when key players are sidelined. For installers, knees can take a beating over the course of a career.

Wear knee pads for every job, not only the long ones. Short stretches of kneeling add up over a day, a week and a career.

Replace pads once the foam flattens or the straps stop holding them in place. Stand up, stretch and shift positions when you can.
